After five years in practice, Dr. Christopher Bauer had a decision to make: renovate his existing space or acquire the adjacent space and expand his booming practice along with the planned remodel. He had already purchased much of the technology Bauer Dental Co. is known for, but it was hidden away “in every corner of our old office.” The 3D printer was housed in the sterilization room, and the cone beam was in his personal office. These less-than-ideal placements made expansion the obvious choice.
Now center stage, the large, gleaming lab is the first thing patients see when they enter – and that’s just how he likes it, saying it’s a great conversation starter about the type of dentistry patients can expect. Just to name a few, Dr. Bauer employs CBCT, laser dentistry, 3D printing and AI diagnostics to keep him at the top of his game and to help patients understand the treatment he is prescribing.
“I hate giving bad news. I hate telling people they have cavities,” he said. But “A picture is worth a thousand words. Seeing it on the screen, they’re like, ‘Oh yes, let’s start. Let’s fix that.’” Having patients actually see their issues prompts them to request treatment, which he points out is not the norm.
Getting to this level of technological advancement and success necessitated a team effort. During the expansion and to this day, Dr. Bauer appreciates being able to run ideas past his Patterson territory representative, Sean Beshwate. “I see Sean as a business partner, if you will. Most of my business decisions, most of my technology decisions, I bounce off him…. I think Patterson is just – head and shoulders above the rest.”
According to Patterson equipment specialist Rick Hodkin, Dr. Bauer occupies rare air when it comes to being on the cutting edge of technology. “I would say he’s probably in the top 1% of dentists. Not many people have all these things to offer,” he said.
