Lips: Whether they’re thick, thin, pouty, or plump, we’ve all got ’em – and thank goodness we do! They help us speak, emote, eat, drink, and they have the all-important job of protecting our mouths. For bearing all of that responsibility, we should take at least one day of the year to thank them, right? Luckily, such a day already exists. It’s called “Lip Appreciation Day,” and it’s celebrated each year on March 16th.

We put together this list of 10 easy ways to “celebrate” Lips Appreciation Day, and created a free printable to go along with it. The printable was made to fit an 8×10 frame, so that you can display it at your practice’s front desk, atop a table in your reception area, or anywhere you like. Might we suggest placing it alongside a basket of take-home lip balms for your patients? Below you’ll find the link to download the printable PDF, as well as additional detail on each of these 10 ideas. Enjoy! ?

  1. Exfoliate – Give your lips some love by exfoliating away dead skin cells. Pick up some lip scrub from the store, or make your own DIY version. This lovely recipe calls for just 3 ingredients –  brown sugar, honey, and coconut oil.
  2. Give Your Lips a Massage – While you’ve got that oil out, give your lips a 5-minute massage. Besides increasing circulation, nourishing oils like olive oil, coconut oil, or almond oil, provide valuable nutrients that your lips will soak in.
  3. Try Lip Yoga – Yup, you read that right! Taking just 10 minutes a day to do a few simple facial exercises will stimulate the production of collagan and help define and enlarge your lips. This how-to video walks you through each exercise. (Don’t worry you’re not alone in watching…it has over 1 million views!)
  4. Protect Your Lips From the Sun – The skin on your lips is much thinner than the skin on the rest of your body, which makes your pout susceptible to sun damage. Protect your lips from harmful rays by using a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher.
  5. Moisturize With Balm – Speaking of lip balm, applying an ointment-based balm regularly is a good habit to get into, particularly in winter months which can be particularly harsh and dehydrating. Applying balm before bed can also keep lips from getting dried out while you snooze – particularly if you’re a mouth-breather.
  6. Drink Water – Drinking water is one of the most important things you can do to keep your lips healthy, along with the rest of your skin and body. Lips are one of the first places where signs of dehydration can be noted, so grab a water bottle to bring out a healthy pink plump as opposed to a pucker that’s dark and dull.
  7. Load Up on Vitamin AVitamin A is really important when it comes to the health of your skin, so do your lips a favor and toss together a delicious salad of leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, and chickpeas!
  8. Sport a New Lip Color – Besides providing a layer of protection against the elements, sporting a fun lip color can boost your confidence. Some matte lipstick formulas can be drying, so choose a moisturizing forumula or apply a coat of lip balm first. Don’t forget to take off your new hue before bed.
  9. Whistle Your Favorite Tune – Whistling is one of the super cool things that only our lips can facilitate. Cooler still? Whistling a tune can improve your health and mood, and even lower your stress levels.
  10. Smile! – No explaination needed! Lips Appreciation Day is the perfect reason to part your pout and show off your healthy, beautiful, one-of-a-kind smile.
