Did you know June 26th is National Toothbrush Day? It’s the perfect excuse to talk toothbrushes, oral hygiene, and how your practice can help patients brush better.
Why National Toothbrush Day Matters
Toothbrushes are the first line of defense in maintaining oral health. According to the American Dental Association, brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste is essential for removing plaque and preventing cavities and gum disease. But equally important? Using the right toothbrush—and knowing when to replace it.
National Toothbrush Day is a simple way to spark conversations about best practices and product choices with your patients.
ADA-Approved Toothbrush Tips to Share with Patients
Here are a few reminders your team can share to align with ADA recommendations:
- Use a soft-bristled brush – The ADA recommends soft bristles for effective cleaning that doesn’t damage enamel or irritate gums.
- Replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months – Or sooner if the bristles are frayed. The ADA emphasizes that worn bristles lose cleaning effectiveness.
- Manual or powered? – Both can be effective. However, some studies supported by the ADA have shown powered brushes may offer benefits for certain patients, including those with orthodontic appliances or dexterity challenges.
- Look for the ADA Seal – Toothbrushes with the ADA Seal of Acceptance meet strict safety and efficacy standards based on scientific evidence.
