We’ve all heard the old adage, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” While there is truth to this statement, it should never be used as an excuse for not striving to be unique and setting yourself apart from your competitors in some way, shape or form. Originality is scarce, and although it may be extremely difficult to come up with something that’s never been done in order to attract and retain customers, with some creativity and collaboration with other creative minds on your team, you can conjure up something your competition is not doing.

Having a good product or service that people want or need is certainly important. This is the heart and soul of your business, the reason you went into business in the first place. But if there’s nothing that sets you apart, there’s no reason people won’t do business with your competitors down the street who are selling or providing the same things.

Ask yourself, and your colleagues, “What are we doing to get people talking? What sets us apart?” And I’m not talking about gimmicks. I’m talking about going above and beyond to achieve customer satisfaction.

What is your “X factor” – that unique service you bestow that supplements the great product or service you already provide, attracting prospective customers and keeping current customers happy and interested in your company? What sets you apart, causing people to say, “Have you heard about [insert your company’s name here]? Not only is their product and service top of the line, but they also.…”

Go above and beyond to achieve customer satisfaction, and your customers will thank you by spreading the word about your unique services, helping your business to grow.
